Badminton for Beginners: Complete Starter Guide
New to badminton? This comprehensive guide covers the basic rules, essential equipment, fundamental strokes, and tips to get you rally-ready quickly.
Why Badminton is Perfect for Beginners
Badminton is one of the most accessible sports — you can start playing a basic rally within minutes. It's excellent cardio, improves coordination, and can be played indoors year-round. Pakistan's growing number of badminton centers make it easier than ever to get court time.
Essential Equipment
Racket: Start with a pre-strung steel or aluminium frame racket (PKR 1,500–3,000). Don't invest in carbon fibre until you've committed to the sport. Look for "flexible" shaft rating for beginners.
Shuttlecocks: Use nylon shuttles (PKR 200–400 for 6) during learning — they're more durable than feather. Once you play consistently, switch to feather for authentic flight.
Shoes: Court shoes with non-marking soles are essential. Running shoes lack the lateral support needed for badminton's quick side movements.
Basic Rules
- Games are played to 21 points (best of 3 games)
- You score a point on every rally (rally-point system)
- The shuttle must land within the court boundaries
- A serve must travel diagonally to the opponent's service box
Four Strokes to Learn First
1. Clear: Hit the shuttle high to the back of the court to create space.
2. Drop shot: Gentle stroke that falls near the net to draw your opponent forward.
3. Drive: Fast, flat stroke parallel to the floor — great for mid-court exchanges.
4. Net shot: Delicate stroke that rolls the shuttle just over the net.
